An Evening with LaToniya Jones

Join us as LaToniya Harris tells her story...LaToniya has more than 20 years combined experience in formal and informal education as a higher education administrator, new faculty mentor, teacher coach, principal, math teacher and nonprofit founder. She facilitates training and presentations in domestic and global school districts, at professional association and international higher education conferences and speaks throughout the community.
POWER (Providing Options While Educating Rigorously) Institute, LLC is the engine that Ms. Jones uses to successfully coach professionals and teacher candidates with closing achievement gaps, redesigning secondary school environments, effective test preparation and workforce development resources. LaToniya recently launched the Well, Refresh My Math! series of workshops for small business owners, job seekers, youth service providers, and parents/guardians. The first installment of the Well, Refresh My Math! handbook series will be released soon. POWER (Presenting Opportunities Winning Effectual Results) Org Math is the 501c3 grassroots organization that LaToniya founded in 2005 to help youth in the metropolitan Detroit area win with math. POWER Org Math hosts conferences, math clubs, classes and Pop Up Math Labs for students and families with the support of volunteer STEM professionals, college and high school students, and caring adults.
LaToniya traveled to South Africa in 2014 to launch a Global Math Initiative with University of Venda colleagues to enhance the academic and cultural experiences of secondary students with STEM. A few of LaToniya’s awards, sponsors, and special media features include: Baker College competitive faculty grant, Clorox Pine Sol, Career Communications Group (STEM), The Links Incorporated, Sigma Beta Fraternity, New Detroit The Coalition, Ebony and Essence magazines, Michigan Chronicle, WDET TV Detroit (NPR affiliate), WDIV TV Detroit (NBC affiliate) and WXYZTV Detroit (ABC affiliate). LaToniya proudly served as an Arts and Scraps board member and the Vice President of PostSecondary Education with Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She continues to collaborate with community based organizations and professional STEM associations to deliver high quality experiences and mentorship for the most unprivileged populations. LaToniya is inspired to build a legacy of compassion, leadership, and entrepreneurship for her 3 sons.
